Our beautiful welcome sign was created for us by artist Mara Howes in 2024. The sign was designed digitally and then printed on aluminum sheet metal to withstand outdoor elements for years to come.
Her depiction of a garden growing out beyond its frame was inspired by our Garden Club at Convent Hill apartments and the greater community of the Juneau Town neighborhood. The garden is extending past constraints, out into the community. Even if it is small, it fills the area — challenging us to ask, “How do you grow beyond constraints?”
The Russian translation of Convent Hill Garden is a nod to the sizable Russian and Ukrainian Jewish population at Convent Hill apartments, welcoming us all to the space.
Mara Howes was a junior pursing a BFA in Communication Design at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) when she created this artwork in 2024.
